Last week Alibaba Cloud announced the launch of their VDI solution called Elastic Desktop Service (EDS). I posted an article explaining in detail what does the service, what are the benefits, and the common use cases.
In this tutorial, I am going to guide you from an administrator perspective on how to configure Alibaba Cloud EDS.
How to configure Elastic Desktop Service (EDS)
The picture below gives you an overview of the steps required to configure and use EDS.
Step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Click on Create directory.
Step 2: Configure the directory. In my case and for this demo, I am going to create a Resource Access Management (RAM) directory.
Note: When creating an EDS directory, it is mandatory to deploy it under a VPC and a vSwitch. For now, EDS is only available on the ‘cn-hangzhou-h‘ availability zone.
Step 3: Once you have created your directory, create RAM users or AD users in the required directory based on the directory type, in my case RAM users.
The following system policies are provided for EDS:
- AliyunECDFullAccess: allows you to use all the features of EDS. You can create, restart, release, or assign reusers to cloud desktops.
- AliyunECDReadOnlyAccess: the read-only permissions. You can query directories and cloud desktops. You can also use the EDS client to connect to cloud desktops.
- AliyunECDRamUserAccess: allows you to use the EDS client. You can only query and restart a cloud desktop, or use the client to connect to a cloud desktop.
If the system policies cannot meet your requirements, you can create a policy to provide fine-grained access control.
Note: I recommend that you grant RAM users only the permissions to use the EDS client. The required system policy is AliyunECDRamUserAccess.
Step 4: Let’s create now the cloud desktop.
Step 5: Configure the billing method, directories, users, policies, desktop templates, and the number of cloud desktops that you want to create. Then, click on Confirm Order.
